Rescale the USS Flagg!

Postby Marthor on Sat Mar 06, 2010 5:21 pm

Rescale the USS Flagg just like they did with the Night Raven.
I'd actually prefer this option much more than if the old one was released.

A real 1:18 scale Aircraft Carrier would be about the size of a semi trailer. The challenge for the USS Flagg is to make one small enough to be sold in stores, small enough for more people to have room for it in their house, yet but big enough so that it's not so grossly underscaled that it becomes repulsive.

The actual vintage Flagg is 7ft 5in long. I'd say a rescaled one could be pulled off in 5ft. That's the size of the folding table I have right here and that still seems plenty big.

Then, to go along wih the new Flagg, maybe a new smaller fighter for GIJOE so you can fit several on the deck! For accuracy make sure it's a plane type that is capable of landing on an aicraft carrier like the Navy F-18 or F-35. I'd say make it similar to the F-35.

Thoughts?

Yea is probable a very bad idea there. The Flagg at seven feet was to small for a air craft carrier. At the most five Sky Strikers crammed the flight deck. At five feet, you probable going to get three at the very most on the deck. Now the whole point of a carrier is to hold jets on it for take off and landing. Who is going to want a small carrier that can old have one plan lading and only one taking off. Also the tower probable take up most of the flight deck at that.

Also keep in mind most people were pissed off at Hasbro for making the night raven in to a little crappy plan. Can you imagine the shear rage against Hasbro if they did the same to the Flagg????????????? Also keep in mind what makes the Flagg a bad ass toys is the size of it!

No offense but this really has to be one of the worst ideas you ever posted.

Sure, it would look too small with a couple SKYSTRIKERS on the deck. That's why I mentioned making a new smaller F-35 style plane maybe about the size of the Storm Eagle.

Since the Storm Eagle is only half the size of the Skystriker, and we're not shrinking the Flagg by 50%, you'd actually be better off in fitting more on the deck than you were with the old one. Most people still wouldn't have an old Skystriker though anyway (or more than one), and the 5ft deck could still handle one Skystriker if you must. Tomcats are retired though, so I'd rather a newer plane was featured myself. Didn't see any skystrikers on the deck in Resolute either.

In making a new Flagg, they could also redesign it too. Perhaps add a big elevator on the back that can lift a plane up/down so you could park a couple planes inside the hanger? Lot's of other new play features could be added too!!

Using the night raven as a successful rescale is just WRONG! that thing sucked all kinds of gay ass. I turned it down for as low as $9 because I really can't think of a single reason why I could want it.

Doing the same thing to the flagg would just piss me off almost as much as what Resolute did to Scarlett and Storm Shadow.

A traditional carrier was impossible in the first place, especially since the skystriker was already out and scaled so close to actual size, but they did the best they could. A new design wouldn't be a bad idea, but believability has to be suspended or no one will like either the old or the new. The idea of a scaled down version would be a good idea, especially if it was intended to be a smaller support size ship and carry a certian type and number of jet in the first place. It doesn't necessarily have to carry all types of planes if that were the case, then poeple might like it better. Not to mention is the team really big enough to necessitate having a full size carrier in the first place? A smaller ship could get around faster (and cheaper) and smaller jets can sometimes be adventages anyway.
On a sales note it might be nice to include one of the jets with the playset (w/ a pilot) but make room for more on deck or in hanger bay, then sell the same jet by itself (w/ or w/o pilot) and allow people to buy as many as they want for it. That way the cost is lower on the set itself and you can add more jets w/o buying more sets! The more I think of it, I really like the idea! And also it would be easier to play with for kids and easier to display for us! :thumbsup

Rock, do you own a vintage Night Raven then?
I passed on the vintage one, more than once, both because it was too expensive and too large. I never considered adding a "Night Raven" to my collection at all until they came out with the new smaller one. The new NR is still pretty large too! I like it and now I have 4.

It's the same deal with the Flagg. I wouldn't even consider getting a vintage one because it's too large and probably too expensive. If they made a new one that was a bit smaller, but not too small, then I'd be more interested.

That's a great idea to have one of the new jets included along with availability to buy more on the side too and get as many as you want.

Mr. Marthor, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. If good lovin' from a beautiful woman could take the form of a plastic toy airplane, it would be the original Night Raven. :D

As for the Flagg, personally, I think the best thing to do at this point, rather than pine for Hasbro to remake the Flagg in some form, is to either buy an original or make your own. No sense in spending a lot of time waiting for something that's highly unlikely to ever be (re)made. ;)

That's a good point. Making a simple custom one would be fairly cheap to do. In fact, it might be fun just to draw up the design plans alone.

Screw the Flagg, Hasbro just needs to make a better Raven like this one:

- Jay, J.J., James, Jimmy Joe, Jason, Jonathan, Johan, Johnson, Josaphat, Julian, Jillian, Jean, John, Jerry, Jacob, Jared, Jaret, Joseph, Joe-Joe, Rock's Ho, and studmuffin,...I pretty much answer to any of them (except that last one).

That's an awesome video. I'm surprised how agile it was.
The real one couldn't bank as fast as the model one did.
That model one is also "closer" to a 1:18 scale than the vintage Cobra Night Raven is.

The SR-71 was 107.5' long.
107.5ft /18 = 6ft
A 1:18 to scale Night Raven would be 6ft long and would be nearly as big as the vintage FLAGG!

BTW, here's a camera phone picture I took of an SR-71 displayed at Beale AFB, California, with a rainbow in the sky behind it...

That just proves my "Flagg Rescaling" idea.... to increase it to 12 ft..... or more....

I want to say it was BBI who at one time had a 1:18 scale U-Boat in the works. It was going to be something like 14 or 16 feet long or thereabouts. Also seems like the writeup said it was going to be the upper hull only. As with most of the cooler BBI projects, though (*coughcough1:18A-10Warthogcoughcough*), it never got anywhere beyond development. Don't even think any physical mockups were done, as I don't remember any pictures surfacing on the web (oooooooh bad pun there...totally intended! ).

In this proposed rescale / restructioning of the FLAGG, I am curious, is it intended to be 'backward compatable' ? Perhaps a pull out deck for longer takeoffs? (also good for less storage / box space) Akin to the PITs foldup feature, maybe an exclusive collapsable bridge to save on hasbro's packing an extra pesky ladder with it.
If it works (the 85 design) why mess with it? Of course it could use an updated retool in certain spots and a latrine or rec-room, but thats just for basic stuff for my joes to have for off duty time.
It would seem to make as much sense to rescale the FLAGG as it would to put wheels on the PIT. Oh, wait.....
If the FLAGG were to make a resurgence in the modern marketplace, i would suspect it to be sold in pieces, like the 'build a droid' idea, only chunks sold over portioned out pieces over a line, divided through Basic Figures (ladders, barrels, winches, ect) Alpha Vehicles (bridge pieces, radar, ect) , Beta Vehicles (elevator parts, deck plates ect.) and a few Dvd pack sized sets with portions of runway plates and tower, and a 'main' set with basic frame. Or it could just be resized as you suggest....
Oh, I just saw this ! (me asking for a date)
