Larry Hama voices his opinion on Resolute

Postby Rockshield on Thu Mar 04, 2010 12:39 am

..... from the Godfather of G.I. joe himself...

"Never seen Resolute. Don't think I want to. I tried reading one of the scripts. It didn't seem like it had been written by anybody who was familiar with the characters, or who knew anything about the military or weapons. I was offended by its lack of moral center. "

"Resolute may be well crafted, and the writer may be a wonderful person, but it's not anything I would care to watch. I didn't know anything about Wolverine when I was asked to write the book, but at least I bothered to do the research. "

So it can only be good if they use his backstory?

That's unfortunate as I thought it was the best animated version of JOE to date and am looking forward to more.

like it or not, there will not be any more... hasbro's animation of G.I. Joe is going into the "younger" audience category...

Yeah, his comments are a little disheartening. I can understand someone not liking it. Just like RoC. But, I really think he should actually SEE the finished product before passing judgment.

Aside from SS being a real bad guy, not just pretending to be, what characterizations were that far off that it ruined the story?

I assume you mean Scarlett choosing Duke [who you hate] over SE [who you love]. I know you're a Comic cannon guy...but to a toon guy, this isn't out of character at all.

Personally, I think in a military/paramilitary organization there should be no hanky-panky whatsoever.

He probably got to the part in the script that described Duke being in charge, and decided it was crap because of that.

Also, if I win the lottery, I will do everything possible to bankroll a new Joe cartoon along the lines of Resolute. Only better.

sorry but for me Hama's opinion doesn't carry much weight, Warren Ellis the guy who wrote resolute is a tremendous writer while Larry Hama is a hack, no matter how well the first what fifty issues of the comic were they got real corny real fast and sadly Hama's never been able to write a good story since, oh and his wolverine stuff SUCKED!!!!

It is if you watched all of the cartoon episodes.... Scarlett was never "back and forth between who she wanted"

I absolute agree 100% I think in the comics, certain romantic backrounds added depth to the characters, as in Destro and the Baroness, and even weird relationships like Zaranya and Roadpig.... but in "shorter" storylines, worrying about romantic entanglements not only detract from the main storyline, but it also gives us less time for action and story development.

While I haven't read much of anything in the way of Larry's retrospectives on working on the Marvel book, I would venture to guess that he had more wiggle room early on with the characters and stories...when the whole thing was more of an experiment. But after a while, Hasbro began to tighten the leash...which led to a lot of weak story bits later on.

Didn't Ellis write Hitman for DC? I loved that book...funny stuff. Or no, wait...that was Garth Ennis.

I can understand why he would feel that way, but at least watch it and then pass judgment. I agree that the cartoon was true to GI Joe but at the same time it was a good story and it was just what we all been wanting to see. A more adult manor GI Joe story with Snake Eyes killing people for once!

I agree that his opinion on resolute doesn't mean much. Resolue was clearly an extension of the cartoon and not the comic. Being the man that came up with most of the character bios he is entitled to say that he doesn't like where they ended up, but like it or not the cartoon was made the way it was and alot of people didn't (unfortunatly) read the comic, the toon is all they know (or like). Some people like one or the other (Hama) and some meld the two together (Devils Due) but the writer of resolut seemed to like toon better, and thats okay cuz they did a great job updating it for adults and the passage of time.
I think they added the Scarlett/SE and the SS/SE story lines because they are popular with most fans. But for that matter time has passed between the old cartoon and the new, so maybe a Scarlett/SE match up occured during that time. And just because the original never mentioned direct animosity between SE and SS doesn't mean it wasn't there, again because the toon did'nt pick up at the begining of the Joe teams history (they were already an established team by the first miniseries). For all we know SE and Spirit were high fiving it off camera!

Actually, it was supposed to have nothing to do with either history.

Wow, HVAC_Viper is alive and online! WOO HOO!

I loved Resolute for the same reasons I loved the early Devil's Due stuff. It was a great combination of the different storylines with coolness added in. Whether one's preferred storyline is from filecards, cartoons, comic books or simply created during play, err, I mean "displaying", I find them all interesting. Each has their pros and cons but as long as you're happy with it, that's all that matters.

Personally, I like the variety and mix different elements into my own universe. I am strongly influenced by the early Marvel run which I thought turned to junk before it even reached issue #100. I also like different parts of the original cartoons, especially the first miniseries. I've never seen any of the later toons so I'm unfamiliar with those. At the same time I enjoy the different take from the UK Action Force comics that I've read. I think I just get easily bored once all of the character stories become known and the outcome is expected *coughsnake-eyescough*. In my opinion, I find it rather ironic that I've liked JOE related stuff less and less as Hasbro forced their hands into it. It really hurt the Marvel run and completely destroyed the Devil's Due line which, I feel, was the largest and most positive force behind promoting JOE-communities of which we are now a part and supporting the collecting community as a whole. I think Hasbro is its own worst enemy sometimes.

It's been a while since I watched it, and loved it... BUT, since it is not really a part of any continuity, will Resolute really be remembered 5 or 10 years later?

RoC seems to be setting up a new movie continuity.

IDW is setting up a new mythos,

The old cartoon and comic continuities are still getting a little play out there in comics like 155 1/2 and the new Big Lob mini-series...

But Resolute? Unless there is a "Resolute 2" I think it will eventually be forgotten, or relegated to the shelf next to "vaolur vs venom"

I kind of thought that at first too, but quickly realized that it made a HUGE impact among adult collectors and fans compared to some of the other mentions. Personally, I'd rather see one episode of good JOE treatment like Resolute over any ongoing forced and milked storyline.
